Usually not. Most of the coach days listed here exclude it, so the fare gets you to Alnwick and the gate is a second payment. The exception is the small-group tour that offers a package option with the ticket reserved in the fare; on the others, buying at check-in where the operator offers it beats queueing on arrival.

The grounds open at 10am and close at 5pm through the season. The State Rooms keep shorter hours, 10:30am to 4:30pm, and the Great Kitchen closes at 4:45pm. The castle runs from the end of March to 22 October 2026 and is shut over the winter.

3:45pm for the grounds, and 4pm for the State Rooms. Those are two different deadlines and the second one is the one that catches people out: a coach reaching Alnwick at half past two with “two hours” leaves you comfortably inside the first and tight against the second.

The castle recommends at least two to three hours. That matters when you are choosing a tour, because the coach days here give you between ninety minutes and three hours — the shortest land at or under the castle’s own floor, and only the longest reach the top of it.

By coach on one of the day trips listed here, which leave from six different pavements around the city between 8:15am and 9am, or under your own steam — Alnwick is eighty miles south, about two hours by car. There is no direct train to Alnwick itself; the line stops at Alnmouth, three and a half miles away.

Not among the listings here, which all depart Edinburgh. That is worth saying plainly, because Newcastle is thirty-five miles from the castle and Edinburgh is eighty. Getting there is the harder half: almost every coach listing here states it is not wheelchair accessible, and the two that bend will carry a collapsible chair only if someone travels with you to help board. The longest stops give three hours: the sixteen-seat small-group day from Edinburgh Bus Station, and the ten-hour coach day that also visits Holy Island. Everything else runs between ninety minutes and two and a half hours, and the castle’s own ticket gives you the day.

For the State Rooms and the film locations, yes — it is one of the largest inhabited castles in England and the art in the Drawing Room is a genuine private collection rather than a display. The judgement worth making is not whether to come but how long to give it: at ninety minutes you see a courtyard, at three hours you see the castle.

Yes. It has been the home of the Percy family, Dukes of Northumberland, for over seven hundred years and remains a family home. That is why parts are closed to visitors and why the season ends in October rather than running all year.

One of the finest private art collections in the country: paintings by Canaletto, Titian, Van Dyck, Turner and Dobson, in Italianate rooms remodelled in the nineteenth century. The Drawing Room holds the Cucci cabinets, made originally for Louis XIV of France. Photography and video are not permitted inside.

An indoor family attraction inside the castle in which you join Harry Hotspur and the Dragon Catcher, work through obstacles and meet a dragon at the end. It is included in admission and it is the reliable wet-weather hour if the Northumberland sky turns.

Very. Between the Artisans Courtyard, Dragon’s Quest, Have-a-Go Archery and the broomstick sessions, most of the site is built for them, and under-5s go free. The harder question is the journey: minimum ages on the coach days here run 4, 5, 7 and 12, so the tour rules out more families than the castle does.

There is, and it varies more than you would expect. One tour carries children from four, three from five, one from seven and one is adults and over-12s only. Check the listing before you book if you are travelling with young children.

Between four and forty-seven. The private car takes up to four, five departures cap at sixteen, one runs a thirty-three-seat midi-coach and one seats up to forty-seven. Group size changes the pace at every stop, and it is not visible on a price-sorted list.
