Alnwick Castle and Harry Potter: Filming at the Real Hogwarts

Alnwick was the outside of Hogwarts in the first two films, and the Outer Bailey is where Harry learned to fly. What that means in practice — and what was never filmed here at all.

Which films, and what was shot

Alnwick Castle stood in for the exteriors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The series moved on after that, which is why the castle’s own material specifies the first two rather than gesturing at the franchise.

The Outer Bailey and the flying lesson

The wide grassed courtyard inside the walls is where Madam Hooch’s first flying lesson was filmed, and it is the single most recognised piece of ground on the site. It is open to anyone with a ticket. You do not need a guided tour, a special pass or a particular time of day — you walk in and it is there.

The castle now runs Broomstick Training on the same ground, with its own instructors, and Have-a-Go Archery alongside it. Both are included in admission and both run to a timetable set on the day, so ask at the gate as you come through rather than going looking at three o’clock.

What was not filmed here

This is the honest part, and it is the reason to read this before you book. The Great Hall, the moving staircases, the common rooms and the dormitories were sets and other buildings. Alnwick supplied the outside of Hogwarts and the Bailey the broomsticks went up from. Arriving expecting to walk into the interiors you remember is the one way to be disappointed by a genuinely remarkable castle.

Beyond Potter

Alnwick has been a working film location for more than thirty years, and the Potter connection is the loudest part of a longer list. Downton Abbey fans know the same walls as Brancaster Castle.

Which tours put you on that ground

Every listed tour reaches the castle, so every one of them reaches the Bailey. What differs is how long you get there and whether the fare covers getting through the gate at all. The film-marketed departures are not automatically the ones that give you the most time.

Getting the most out of it

• Ask for the day’s timetable at the gate. Broomstick Training and archery are scheduled, not continuous.
• Do the State Rooms first anyway. They stop admitting at 4pm; the Bailey is outdoors and open until five.
• The best exterior shot is from outside. The view everyone recognises is from the Lion Bridge on the road below — there are more of them in the gallery.
• No photography in the State Rooms. The Bailey and the grounds are fine.
