Things to Do at Alnwick Castle: State Rooms, Museums and the Artisans Courtyard
The castle asks for two to three hours. What fits in yours depends on the stop your tour gives you — and on knowing that the best rooms close an hour before everything else.

The State Rooms
Italianate interiors overseen by Luigi Canina and Giovanni Montiroli in the 1850s and 60s, holding one of the finest private art collections in the country. The distinction between private and public matters here: these are rooms a family uses, so the pictures hang where somebody chose to live with them rather than at gallery eye-line, and the Cucci cabinets stand in the Drawing Room without a case around them.
Photography and video are not permitted inside. The rooms are a one-way route with staff in each space, which means a group ahead of you sets your pace for the whole circuit — arriving just before a coachload rather than just after is worth more than any other timing decision at this castle.
The Great Kitchen
Salvin built it in the Victorian restoration and a four-year conservation project brought it back. It answers the question the State Rooms raise: how a household on that scale actually ate. It closes at 4:45pm, it takes about twenty minutes, and it is the single thing most likely to be walked past by anyone on a ninety-minute coach stop.
The museums and exhibitions
Three museums and two exhibitions, all in the admission price, covering the Percy family and the Northumberland Fusiliers. This is the part that rewards an unhurried visit and the first thing to go when the clock is tight, which is a good argument for the castle’s own ticket if the history is why you came. The Outer Bailey, and what runs on it
The grassed courtyard inside the walls, open to every ticket-holder. Broomstick Training runs here with the castle’s own instructors, on the ground the flying lesson was filmed on, and Have-a-Go Archery runs alongside it. The Artisans Courtyard and Dragon’s Quest
A medieval-themed area with costume, swordplay, period games, craft-making and thrones to be photographed on, and indoors alongside it Dragon’s Quest, in which you join Harry Hotspur and the Dragon Catcher, work through obstacles and meet a dragon at the end. Both are in the ticket, both are aimed at families, and Dragon’s Quest is the reliable hour when the Northumberland sky turns.

Reverse the obvious order. Most people turn left into the courtyard because it is in front of them; the State Rooms stop admitting at 4pm and everything else is open until five. The two closing times are set out on the visiting page.
The Alnwick Garden, next door
The Alnwick Garden, its Grand Cascade and its Poison Gardens sit on adjoining ground with a separate ticket, and Lilidorei alongside them. A castle ticket does not include any of it. Several coach days give you one block of free time and leave the choice to you, so make it before you step off rather than at the gate.
