The causeway crossing turned out to be the part we remember. Our guide had the tide timetable worked out to the minute and never made a drama of it, and reaching Alnwick Castle in the afternoon light was worth the early start on its own.

The State Rooms are the reason to come. Canaletto on the wall of a house somebody still lives in is not something you see often, and the guides in each room clearly enjoy being asked.

Last entry at 3:45 arrives sooner than you think if you start with the grounds. We did the courtyard first and had to hurry the State Rooms, which was our own fault but worth flagging.

Harry Potter's Alnwick Castle and Scottish Borders Day Trip
Standing in the Outer Bailey at Alnwick Castle where the flying lesson was filmed was the whole point, and it delivered. Our guide had stills on a tablet to line the shots up.
